Unprecedented collaboration and coordination in research and development characterized many aspects of the global response to COVID-19. However, in parallel to these efforts, fragmented national implementation of public health policies took precedence in many instances, leading to the inequities experienced in vaccination and health outcomes seen today. While WHO and other health institutions continue to play a leading and assertive role in translating the science into a global research roadmap, many efforts at using the available facts and attempts at coordination and collaboration were trumped by political self-interest. Encouragingly, communities have continued to step into the void left by rash political decisions and have repeatedly picked up service delivery and support for people impacted by COVID-19, HIV and many other health concerns. This session will explore the various facets of leadership in the response to COVID-19 and HIV and how we can learn from this for future pandemics to ensure strong, collaborative and fact-based leadership.
