In June 2018 Correctional Service Canada (CSC) launched the Prison Needle Exchange Program (PNEP) in two institutions. The PNEP program allows participants to have a PNEP kit containing sterile consumption equipment for their use, which they are able to exchange. The following year in 2019 an Overdose Prevention Service (OPS) was launched at one site. The OPS program allows participants to consume a personal amount of drug using sterile equipment under the supervision of a healthcare professional. HIV / HCV prevention is a major objective of these prison-based harm reduction programs. This session will provide a front-line perspective on the barriers, challenges and the successes that were faced in implementing these programs. Both the PNEP (now available at 9 sites) and the OPS are viable harm reduction options for the correctional environment.
