A collaborative team from GATE and amfAR will bring together activists, researchers, and policymakers for a practical discussion of how to increase trans inclusion in national HIV planning processes. Participants will leave this satellite with knowledge about the current state of trans inclusion in national HIV plans globally as well as key advocacy strategies to increase trans inclusion in their own settings. The satellite will begin with two brief presentations. Firstly, amfAR researchers will give a presentation on the results from a recent systematic review documenting the quality of trans inclusion in the National HIV Strategic Plans (NSPs) of 60 countries. Results of the review were recently published in the Journal of the International AIDS Society. Secondly, GATE staff will introduce key findings from a mixed methods research endeavor to document community perspectives on best practices for trans inclusions in NSPs. Two best-practices guides aimed at activists and governments are available in several languages. Following the presentations, GATE staff will moderate a panel of local trans activists from Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia who will each discuss their experience advocating for trans inclusion in the NSP development process over the past year. Activists come from organizations that were funded to undertake this work by the Elton John AIDS Foundation and will share lessons learned and key strategies and barriers to advocacy. Colleagues from UNAIDS and the Global Fund will be in attendance and will be asked to prepare brief remarks and reflections on the presentations and suggestions for the next steps. Time will then be allotted for full participant discussion between activists, policymakers, and researchers, followed by opportunities for informal discussions.
