Despite recent progress on human rights in Canada, 2SLGBTQI+ populations still face inequities across a range of health and social determinants. Several progressive movements informed early efforts to address 2SLGBTQI+ health but the HIV pandemic created conditions whereby our diverse communities' health needs became defined by a single disease. While communities nevertheless found creative ways to address a range of health issues, disease-specific approaches cannot address the full scope of 2SLGBTQI+ health. A holistic approach is needed – one that encompasses not only HIV/STBBI as ongoing critical concerns, but also chronic diseases, mental health, substance use, discrimination and violence, as experienced across 2SLGBTQI+ and intersecting identities (e.g. age, Indigeneity, racialized communities). Through speakers and moderated discussion, this session will propose action and encourage participants to reflect critically on these goals. It will build on lessons learned, challenges and opportunities from the HIV response to achieve health equity for all 2SLGBTQI+ populations. Presentations available here.
