HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a critical component of national HIV testing programs. The expansion of HIVST in the last five years has enabled countries to significantly increase access to HIV testing services (HTS), especially among key and priority populations. However, the high price of HIV self-tests compared to professional use tests used by HTS providers has limited scale up. Many countries simply cannot afford to purchase enough HIV self-tests to meet demand in existing distribution channels, let alone expand HIVST into new and innovative channels. In this session, panelists will review progress on HIVST in low- and middle-income countries, explore opportunities for expanding HIVST, share perspectives on the potential for lower priced HIV self-tests to increase access, and discuss commitments to support near-term HIVST scale-up.
